Legal Pact’s Comments to the High-Level Advisory Board for the Drafting of the ‘Pact for the Future

A pen in hand is powerful. The ability to read and write makes humans unique; no other species on Earth can read and write as humans do. With this skill we can answer the call of the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to draft a “renewed social contract”.

In his "Common Agenda Report," the UN Secretary General decided that humanity needs a "renewed social contract." He then created the Summit of the Future to discuss and draft this new social contract, and created a High Level Advisory Board (HLAB) to draft a "Pact for the Future" that would be the outcome document for the Summit, to be held in New York City in September, 2024.

The HLAB was instructed by the Secretary General to consult with civil society (activists, NGOs, academics, businesses and foundations) as to what should be included in the Pact for the Future outcome document for the Summit.

Civil society then held a conference in New York City, the "Global Futures Forum" in March, 2023 to collect input from civil society as to what should be included in the Pact for the Future document. More than 2,000 people representing NGOs, academics, businesses and foundations attended the Global Futures Forum, and a draft was made of a "People's Pact for the Future", a document that could be considered by HLAB for inclusion within the "Pact for the Future" it was preparing.

People and organizations at the Global Futures Forum felt that judicially enforceable environmental and human rights are important to be included within the People's Pact for the Future, and the Pact for the Future. Enforceable rights are at the heart of a "renewed social contract." They then set up a new nonprofit, the "Legal Pact for the Future" to link together a collaboration of all the various supporters of judicially enforceable environmental and human rights and the rule of law.

The logo for the Legal Pact for the Future depicts its mission: "To bring together people, NGOs, businesses and governments to make a united call for judicially enforceable environmental and human rights in the courts of all countries."

For New Year’s Eve 2024, the HLAB sent out a call for comments on the Pact for the Future to prepare for the Summit of the Future in September 2024.

We have submitted our written comments which have been shared on the UN website - a good way to start the New Year!

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy new year! All the best to the HLAB and the Summit of the Future!
